Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

What are different ways these virtual worlds can be used?
A virtual world is defiend as an online community (taking the form of a computer based ontline stimulated environment) allowing users to interact with each other other use and create objects etc. Within virtual worlds users can interact and inhabit their made up world.
MMORPG = massively multiplayer online role playing games = in this case the user playing a specific charachter is the main feature of the game (main charahcter basically)
MMORLG = massively multiplayer online real life games = in this case the user can create their charachter and make it as he/she wishes it to be; playing a more dynamic role that suits their charachter, possibly even playing more than one charachter at a time. This is the more invovled personalized version of virtual worlds.
What are the pros and cons? Be specific.
PROS
- much more creative and in a way more personal than an email or chat
- everyone is the same - age, race, gender, etc none of it matters because everyone is what they make themselves
- people ftrom all over the world, all different time zones can connect with each other and meet each other
- education - makes learning more real to students
- can make a person feel like they are worth something; like someone is paying attention to them
- highy adoptive - you can easily do things in the virtual world that you would either not have the opportunity to do or the capability to do in your real life
- takes you places and intorduces you to things that yo normally would not be able to from your home. The article "I’ve Been in That Club, Just Not in Real Life " http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/arts/television/06itzk.html?_r=1 explains more about this and gives a real life example of a man that visited the lower east side from his computer via a virtual world
CONS
- can take over your life 24/7; can become a disease
- can become your whole life - forcing you to abandon you real freidns and family
you can be tricked and decived into beleiving things about people; they can make you beleive what they want you to beleive and because you know nothing about them besides what they are presenting to you, youare forced to beleive it.
- can make a person feel badly about themsleves; lead to depression
- if you are not of the technology age, might be hard to navigate a virtual world
- there is also bad in the virtual world just as there is bad in the real world; someone can fall into bad habits very easily in the virtual world.
How do virtual worlds foster creativity?
- Opens peoples eyes to things that they have never senen before.
- Is a somewhat competitive atmosphere, and competitin can lead to creativity
- Everyone wants to get noticied and be liked - must do things that will stand out and make you noticed!
- You can see what other people do and how they do it, giving youideas of what you can do and how you can do it and make it your own.
What do you think the future of virtual worlds will look like?
I think that in the future virtual worlds are going to progress and become less virtal and more real. I think that this is a creepy cocnept but so cool. Cant wait ti see what is going to happen in the enxt world!

Social Networking

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?
1. PR - companies, brands, celebrities, etc can use twitter, facebook and other social networking sites as a good PR source. Good way to keep in touch with customers and fans. Also lets your readers read what you want them to read. You are the source of information, you are in control.
2. Corporate - a large corporation can use a social networking site to keep all their employees from all the different departments and segments of the company linked. Helps everyone stay on top of everything that is going on within the company, this way everyone is in the loop about everything.
3. Job - twitter can be your job. Companies will higher you to tweat for them, this is looked at as a new form of customer service and PR.
More info view entire article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/21/fashion/21whiz.html?_r=1
Also there are companies and places that post job offerings on twitter. Surprisingly you can find a job on twitter!
For more info view the entire article:

4. The list does not end her, it goes on and on and on, and it is only expanding as time goes on.

What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific. Is there a "dark side"?
Yes, there are many benefits but there are also many drawbacks. There is definitely a "dark side" to these technologies.
Benefits = easy to use and resourceful. Makes keeping in touch with people from all over very easy and inexpensive.
Dark side = people become obsessed. Waste of time. Becomes useless and pointless after a while. A large majority of tweets are becoming "pointless babble" information that is just dumb (example I just ate a sandwich - no one really cares!!)

Opinion of the way these technologies might evolve in the future.
I believe that these technologies are only going to grow and expand in the future. The younger generations are growing up with these technologies and social networking sites- its all they know! They don't understand what it means to call a persons house, speak to their mother or brother and hope that they are around to pick up the phone. They are used to tweeting from their cel phones and updating their facebook statuses!
The epidemic is only going to get more and more out of hand until it is an uncontrollable force that takes over our lives!

SN Sites

Facebook
Out of all these sites,  the only site I have actually used before is Facebook, and honestly I really haven't used very much of it. I think that it is a fun and entertaining way to keep in touch with friends and acquaintances that you otherwise wouldn't communicate with.
Pictures are a huge aspect of facebook (videos too but not as much). There are ways to share events and such with your friends. Games are also available, good pass time.

Myspace
First thing I notices was that myspace leaned heavily towards music, movies, and videos. Almost similar to a mini itunes.
In addition, I realized that the browse options were very specific. You can search for specific types of people; based on gender, race, relationship status, hobbies, etc. This seemed to be a bit creepy and stalkerish to me.

Friendster

Did not seem as professional to me. I felt like it was a poorly made site. Not visually stimulating and not properly organized. Bad layout and design.
Looks less popular, and not used as much as other sites.
Still has all the basics - profile, friends, photos, - just added games - something that the others have always had!
Seems to be one step behind the times.

Twitter

Very easy to sign up - easier than friendster!
Allows you to choose and browse interest suggestions, and choose friends - link to anyone via email, and then finally search for anyone. Makes set up very easy.
Basically gives you 140 characters to tell all your friends what your up to. This is called a tweet.
I personally think that is is ridiculous because why do you care who is getting a haircut and who is stuck on the train? All useless information!

Blogs vs. Wikis

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis.
Blogs are similar to publishing. One person posts their ideas, feelings, knowledge, etc for others to read. Therefore, there is limited collaboration - its not open for anyone and everyone to edit and contribute to.
This is a way that someone can states their voice, create an identity for themselves, take control of a topic, etc.
It is a good alternative to a personal webpage because ti takes less technical knowledge and is much easier to use. Can even easily link to webpages and even other blogs.
A common use of blogs today i sin the entertainment industry (prime example Perez Hilton). New innovative way to spread celebrity gossip. New media (blogging) is effecting the traditional way of spreading celebrity gossip - which was magazines! This is further discussed in the article: Celebrity Blogs: The Impact of New Media: (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/26280/celebrity_blogs_the_impact_of_new_media.html)
Wikis - the 3 C's: Communication, Collaboration, and community.
Communication - everyone can easily contribute making it a collaborative page. You can tweak and adapt the page to your needs. making it even easier.
Collaboration - you can create a specific page and make it open to whomever you want, creating a large knowledge base. Lends itself to good technical support and easy idea generation.
Community - not centralized control - everyone has equal control.

Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world.
Technologies are continuously growing and expanding - combining different things and making things multitask. For example a cell phone - which used to be just that a phone, is now also a messaging device, web browser, calendar, etc.
TOday we are always once step ahead of ourselves, looking for the next new thing that will make our lives that much "easier" - we ask for convergence and accept it with open arms.
How can blogs be used for collaboration?

Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?
I am not sure if this has been done yet or not, but voice notes and videos can be shared on wiki also. it is a good way to share information and knowledge. Add visual and sound effects.

Project Description

The topic I have chosen for my paper is:
IMPACT. Examine a particular area / discipline in which the new media have had an impact.  How have the new media affected this area? How is this area likely to be affected in the near future?

Is technology improving our social lives or blindly taking ours away?

Technology is impacting and penetrating almost every aspect of our lives. New media and social networking devices are starting to affect our generations social and communication skills.

The next time you are at a restaurant, take a look around and find a table that consists of younger people (age rand 18-30). Notice how most of them will have their cell phones, PDAs, blackberries, iphones, etc out on the table in the middle of the meal. Texting, emailing, and even answering phone calls in the middle of the meal while they are trying to carry on a conversation with their friends, family, acquaintances. Can they not put their phone away for that short amount of time while they are at the restaurant?
Lets take a party scene- say a sweet sixteen or a 21st birthday bash. How many people are on the sidelines on their cell phones? Or even worse, ignoring the people that are talking to them, not socializing with the people at the party, because they are so consumed by their communication device.
To take it one step further, more and more kids are getting cell phones at even younger ages. How will they be acting and behaving? Will they ever get the chance to be free of their cell?

Unfortunately, it is not only cell phones and other handheld communication devices that are affecting todays generation, its also social networking sites such a facebook, twitter, and other online communication sites. People become so obsessed and consumed by these sites that they end up loosing touch with the actual people. They will have hundreds, maybe even thousands of friends on facebook, they will twitter a thousand tweets a day, but when was the last time they had a substantial conversation with one of their friends face to face? We are becoming so accustomed to communicating online that we are slowly forgetting what it means to confront a person face to face.

Describe New Media

What kinds of technologies are examples of new media?
Some examples of new media include, but of course are not limited to: ebooks, hypertext, wikipedia, blogs, mashups, ezines, podcasts, full TV episodes available on the internet, forums, VOIP, youtube, flickr, picasa, and the list goes on and on and is constantly changing with every passing day.
- These examples of NEW media are equivalent to OLD media: books, journalism, music, newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, telephones, film, and even photography.

How do we distinguish “new media” from “old” media?
New media is a reinvention of old media. A way of essentially doing the same thing but in a new more technologically sophisticated manner. For example new media would be reading an ebook on your ipad, while old media would be going to the library and taking out your favorite hardcover novel.

Michael Jackson: how celebrity gossip site TMZ got scoop of the decade
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jun/26/michael-jackson-tmz-scoop
This article is a good example of the difference between new media and old media, and societies struggle with accepting new media over old media.
TMZ online gossip site = New Media
Los Angeles Times = Old Media
In this case, gossip readers were hesitant to believe the news of Michael Jackson's passing from the TMZ site. They were unsure of their credibility and reliability. Interestingly enough, only a few minutes later, they somberly accepted the news from the LA Times; a more established and credible newspaper.
Honestly, I have to say that I probably would have done the same. When reading most of these gossip columns and blogs online I am hesitant to believe much of what I am reading. Although TMZ is a credible site that is backed by TIme Warner, people are more comfortable going the conventional route and trusting the LA times when it comes to bigger stories and more serious news.
